Acclaimed reporters Christopher Wren and Stephen Handelman gave several lectures on the former Soviet Union at the University of Kentucky in March 2010 as guests of the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Communications and Information Studies.

Wren, who covered Moscow, Beijing, Cairo, and Johannesburg for the New York Times, has trained journalists in Russia as well as Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. He is the author of The End of the Line: The Failure of Communism in the Soviet Union and China.

Handelman is director of the Center on Media, Crime and Justice at John Jay College at City University of New York and executive editor of The Crime Report. He is the author of Comrade Criminal: Russia's New Mafiya and Bio-hazard.
