Investigative journalist and environmental activist Jeff Biggers talks about his latest book, Reckoning at Eagle Creek: The Secret Legacy of Coal in the Heartland, a look at the history of coal mining and the human and environmental costs of U.S. energy policy over the past two centuries. Described as part history and part memoir, the book takes the reader to the the ruins of his family's strip-mined homestead in the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois.

Jeff Biggers, whose previous books include The United States of Appalachia, is a contributing editor to The Bloomsbury Review. His work has been anthologized in Coal Country and We All Live Downstream. He is a member of Coal Free Future Project, a multimedia theater performance company.
