Kentucky Youth Advocates is a non-partisan, non-profit advocacy group formed in 1975 by citizens concerned about the welfare of children who are in the custody of the state. In 1983 the KYA expanded its mission to include advocating for prenatal and early childhood health-care services and for a responsive educational system. The KYA compiles the annual Kids Count report, which provides a detailed county-by-county picture of the condition of children in the commonwealth, including statistics on child poverty and abuse and neglect.
Terry Brooks has been executive director of KYA since 2005, after a 30-year career as an educator.
