In 1995, Curt Tofteland, in collaboration with psychologist Julie Barto, founded Shakespeare Behind Bars at the Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in LaGrange. An award-winning documentary about the program, Shakespeare Behind Bars, was made by Philomath Films in 2005.

Tofteland retired in 2008 after 19 years as producing artistic director of the Kentucky Shakespeare Festival in Louisville. He lives in Michigan and travels across the country to college campuses to screen the Shakespeare Behind Bars documentary and and conduct lectures. He recently worked with Northpoint Training Center in Boyle County on a Pioneer Playhouse project to help inmates write their own plays.
