In A History of Education in Kentucky, published in 2011 by University Press of Kentucky, historian Bill Ellis examines public and private education since the settlement of Kentucky. Ellis examines the beginnings of Kentucky education in the late 1700s, dominated by private academies for the elites, and reviews how 19th century political leaders devalued public education. Ellis analyzes reform efforts and discusses ongoing battles related to religious instruction, integration, and the Kentucky Education Reform Act.
Ellis is also the author of The Kentucky River and A History of Eastern Kentucky University.
