The secretary of state is designated by law as the leading advocate in Kentucky for increased voter education, registration, and participation in elections.
The office also directs Kentucky's Department of State, which includes the Division of Corporations (departments of Business Filings, Business Records, and the Uniform Commercial Code) and the Division of Administration (fiscal and personnel matters, public documents, legal affairs, and special projects and commissions).
Grimes, a Lexington attorney, was named the Fayette County Bar Association's Outstanding Young Lawyer in 2010. She also served as a precinct officer for the 75th Legislative District and a member of the 2008 Democratic National Committee Rules Committee. A native of Maysville, she earned a bachelor's degree from Rhodes College and her law degree from American University.
