The Road to the Horse will be held March 15-17, 2013, at the Kentucky Horse Park's Alltech Arena. The World Champion of Colt Training competition's goal is to promote a kinder, gentler way of working with horses.
The invitation-only event features the art of natural horsemanship, or horse whispering, which means using the horse's natural instincts to communicate and rejects using fear or pain to bring the horse to submission. Competitors choose an untouched colt out of a herd of American Quarter Horses and begin building a relationship over three days to gentle the horses, saddle and ride them.
Tootie Bland, a former stunt woman and cowgirl, and her husband, Steven, created the first Road to the Horse event in 2003 in Fort Worth, Texas. Since the death of her husband in 2005, Tootie Bland has continued producing the competition.
Two California women, Sarah Winters and Obbie Schlom, are the final two competitors for the 2013 Road to the Horse. They will compete against reigning 2012 champions from Australia, Dan James and Guy McLean.
