Kentucky Life steps through the famous yellow gate at Bourbon County's Claiborne Farm and then passes into a bygone era by visiting a home in Louisville's first subdivision. The next edition, hosted by Dave Shuffett, airs on KET at 8:30/7:30 p.m. CT Saturday, Jan. 22.
The farm that bred Kentucky Derby winner Swale and was instrumental in the syndication of Secretariat is perhaps the most famous thoroughbred racing operation in the world. Claiborne Farm, owned by the Hancock family, has a proud tradition that stretches back half a century. In this segment, Waddell Hancock--widow of A.B. "Bull" Hancock, who restored the farm to its early prominence--reminisces about the farm's history and direction. Now operated by her son, Seth, the farm that has been host to Queen Elizabeth still follows the dictum of Bull Hancock: "Do the best exceptionally well."
Next, in Louisville's historic St. James Court, the Victorian Era is just a step away through the threshold of the Conrad/Caldwell House. This 1895 Richardsonian Romanesque mansion features a hand-carved stone exterior and period furnishings. In this segment, we learn that the area, Louisville's first subdivision, was the location of the Southern Exposition of 1883. When the exposition closed in 1887, the land was sold for home lots. Visitors to this magnificent home can enjoy its gargoyles, swags, massive arches and fleur-de-lis.
