Digital Divide on KET explores gap in access to computers and technology education

For Release: January 10th, 2000

At the dawn of a new millennium, computers and other electronic technologies play an integral role in nearly every aspect of our lives--from how we work to how we play to how we communicate. But as many of us become increasingly reliant on computers, we find that the gap between those who have access to new technology and those who don't may be growing.

Digital Divide: Technology and Our Future, airing on KET Fridays, Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 at 10/9 p.m. CT, examines the impact of computer technology on young Americans and asks whether or not everyone participates equally in the digital revolution. The two-part series explores some of the best practices for using technology effectively at school and in the home. Grammy-winning recording artist, actor and businesswoman Queen Latifah hosts.

As the program illustrates, social divisions as old as America have continued into the digital realm. Rich and poor, black and white, male and female--all experience the digital revolution in different ways. Through engaging portraits of students and interviews with parents, teachers and technology experts, Digital Divide explores why some children are falling behind in the information age while others may be getting computer exposure without proper guidance.

The first episode, "Computer Classes," looks at computer training offered in schools, giving particular emphasis to the availability of up-to-date equipment and proper teacher training. The second episode, "Virtual Diversity," investigates computer access beyond the classroom. Analysts point out that disadvantaged youth can keep up with the digital age only through access to computers at home and in the community.

Digital Divide: Technology and Our Future, produced by Studio Miramar for the Independent Television Service, is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET by visiting the KET Web site at http://www.ket.org, a Kentucky.com affiliate.
