In 1968, on her 24th birthday, Barbara Sonneborn received word that her husband, Jeff, had been killed in Vietnam. "We regret to inform," the telegram began. Twenty years later, Sonneborn, a photographer and visual artist, embarked on a journey in search of the truth about war and its legacy. KET presents her vision in P.O.V. "Regret to Inform," airing Monday, Jan. 24 at 10/9 p.m. CT.
Framed as an odyssey through Vietnam to Que Son, where Jeff was killed, Sonneborn weaves together the stories of widows from both sides of the war. The result is a profoundly moving examination of the impact of war over time. The film is "so exquisitely filmed, edited and scored, it is the documentary equivalent of a tragic epic poem," writes The New York Times.
P.O.V. "Regret to Inform" is edited by filmmaker Lucy Massie Phenix, a Lexington native, who is best known for her editing of the international award-winner The Life and Times of Rosie The Riveter. Phenix has also worked with Kentucky artistic mainstay Appalshop, as well as on numerous other films.
"Regret to Inform" received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature and won the Best Director and Best Cinematography awards for documentary films at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.
P.O.V. "Regret to Inform" is produced by Barbara Sonneborn and Janet Cole with Lucy Massie Phenix and Ken Schneider and is a co-presentation with the National Asian American Telecommunications Association. The program is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET by visiting the KET Web site at http://www.ket.org, a Kentucky.com affiliate.
