No celebration of Black History Month would be complete without a tribute to great black musicians and their contributions to American music. KET2 serves up just such a tribute with four shows airing in February.
First, , airing Monday, Feb. 14 at 9/8 p.m. CT, uses archival footage, rare photographs and her own words to document the life of this fascinating entertainer.
Then, it's on to Chicago, where, from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s, a 10-block stretch of Michigan Avenue became known as the city's "musical mile"--a glittering boulevard of African-American dreams and disappointments. Record Row: Cradle of Rhythm & Blues airs Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 9/8 p.m. CT.
Next, Ellis Marsalis: Jazz is Spoken Here offers a profile of the renowned pianist, teacher, role model and father of distinguished musicians Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalis. The program airs Monday, Feb. 21 at 8/7 p.m CT.
Finally, Duke Ellington's Washington, airing Monday, Feb. 21 at 10/9 p.m CT, visits the thriving African-American community of early 20th-century Washington, D.C., the center of black culture in America and a jazz mecca for such greats as Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey, Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald.
