For Release: January 14th, 2000
Devastating medieval war machines. Towering Egyptian obelisks. Massive Easter Island monoliths. Heated Roman baths. Graceful Chinese rainbow bridges. For centuries, the modern world has wondered how ancient cultures built these magnificent monuments and machines.
Following the blueprint established in the first season--an archaeology program that eschewed talking heads and inert facts--Secrets of Lost Empires, A Nova Special Presentation follows teams of passionate, inquisitive people as they struggle to duplicate the technological feats of ancient civilizations, using only the kinds of tools and materials available in antiquity. Airing Tuesdays in February at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET, Secrets of Lost Empires is broken down into five unique segments that explore the accomplishments and possibilities of the ancients.
"Medieval Siege" (2/1) examines the trebuchet, or catapult. Next, "Pharaoh's Obelisk" (2/8) asks how to erect a 40-ton stone. "Easter Island" (2/15) looks at transporting massive sculptures and erecting them, while "Roman Bath" (2/22) ponders the construction of ancient systems of plumbing and heating. Finally, "China Bridge" (2/29) contemplates iron suspension bridges built two thousand years ago.
Secrets of Lost Empires, A Nova Special Presentation is produced by WGBH/Boston in association with Channel 4 and La Cinquieme. The programs are closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET by visiting the KET Web site at http://www.ket.org, a Kentucky.com affiliate.
