For Release: January 24th, 2000
Frances O'Connor (Mansfield Park) plays literature's most famous adulteress in Masterpiece Theatre's adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary. The series airs Sundays, Feb. 6 and 13 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET.
The scandalous classic, which was tried for obscenity in a French court in 1857, also stars Greg Wise (Sense and Sensibility) as Emma Bovary's lover, Rodolphe. Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill) plays Emma's oblivious but devoted husband, Charles.
Set in rural Normandy in the 1830s and 40s, the story follows Emma's dreamy and ultimately disastrous quest for the rapturous experiences she finds in books. Reality in the provinces can't possibly live up to her illusions, so she falls prey to seducers and swindlers.
Masterpiece Theatre "Madame Bovary," a BBC America and WGBH/Boston co-production, is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET by visiting the KET Web site at http://www.ket.org, a Kentucky.com affiliate.
