Every summer in a remote wilderness, a primal battle for survival takes place with all the drama of the storied gunfights of the Old West. The combatants, however, are grizzly bears, not cowboys; and, instead of the OK Corral, their battleground is the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary in Alaska.
KET gives viewers an intimate view of this annual rite of combat in Nature "Showdown at Grizzly River," airing Sunday, Feb. 13 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET and Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET2.
"Showdown at Grizzly River" follows the exploits of Teddy, the 21-year-old alpha female bear of the region and her 18-month-old cub Toughie, as they emerge from their winter hibernation to begin the arduous struggle for food.
Salmon that return to the McNeil River to spawn are the bears' primary food source, and they must catch and consume huge numbers every day of the short spring and summer fishing season to bulk up for the long privations of the winter. However, the battle for prime fishing spots is the catalyst for the "showdown."
