It has been known as the cultural center of the world's capitol. For decades, Greenwich Village has been the epicenter of New York City hip. KET looks at this influential neighborhood in New York the Way It Was: Greenwich Village, airing on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 11/10 p.m. CT.
This evocative program takes a nostalgic look at the neighborhood that started a cultural and social revolution and established a legacy of creativity, idealism and attitude. New York the Way It Was: Greenwich Village explores the impact of the Village and those who lived and played there from the 1940s through the 1960s.
Vintage film footage, photographs and interviews capture the spirit of the times as the documentary celebrates Village institutions such as La MaMa, The Living Theater, Circle in the Square, Judson Church, Limelight Café, the Village Vanguard and the Village Gate. This program brings its viewers back to a time when artists became activists, jazz met poetry and a two-square-mile area at the lower end of Manhattan exploded with an energy and attitude that was felt around the world.
New York the Way It Was: Greenwich Village is produced by WLIW. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET by visiting the KET Web site at http://www.ket.org, a Kentucky.com affiliate.
