When it comes to categories, Laura Love defies them all. For a while, she referred to her sound as "funkabilly." Then when her first critically-acclaimed release, Octoroon , came out, the label "Afro-Celtic" was given to her by an astute reviewer.
This hard-to-define songstress brings a solid performance to the next Jubilee , airing Thursday, March 2 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET.
"I've got African blood, European blood, Indian blood, and it all comes out in the music," says Love. "My body seems to have a memory for things I haven't quite experienced. And I have a lot of curiosity about it . . . [and] I get glimpses of it that show up in my music."
Currently touring to support her second, critically-acclaimed release, Shum Ticky , Love was taped at last summer's Master Musicians Festival in Somerset, Ky. Daughter of Count Basie sideman Preston Love and winner of Album of the Year from GLAMA (Gay/Lesbian American Music Awards), Love is a performer not to be missed.
Jubilee, a KET production in its fifth season, is produced and directed by H. Russell Farmer. The show is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET by visiting the KET Web site at http://www.ket.org, a Kentucky.com affiliate.
