For Release: February 14th, 2000
At turns a fighter pilot, test pilot, astronaut and politician, John Glenn has lived a life of unassuming heroism. From outer space to Washington, Glenn talks about his experiences on Kentucky Author Forum Presents: A Conversation with John Glenn . The one-hour program airs on KET Wednesday, March 1 at 10/9 p.m. CT.
Glenn is interviewed by Lou Dobbs, head of space.com, which is considered the definitive Web site devoted to space exploration and space-related content. The lively conversation follows the chronology of Glenn's new book, John Glenn: A Memoir , beginning with a small-town upbringing in Ohio that Glenn says was like something from The Music Man . A Marine fighter pilot in World War II and Korea, Glenn became a test pilot in the 1950s and was selected as an astronaut by NASA. In 1962, he became the first American to orbit the planet.
Encouraged by Robert Kennedy, he ran for the U.S. Senate, finally winning a seat after two setbacks. Glenn served in the Senate for 24 years and ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1984. At age 77, Glenn made a dramatic return to space as a member of the Discovery mission.
Kentucky Author Forum Presents: A Conversation with John Glenn is a KET production, produced and directed by Duncan Hart. Nancy Carpenter is executive producer. The author's appearance in Louisville was produced by the Kentucky Author Forum (Mary Moss Greenebaum, producer) and sponsored by the University of Louisville in cooperation with Hawley-Cooke Booksellers and the Kentucky Center for the Arts.
