Kentucky Life crosses state on 68 for two-hour special on KET in March

For Release: September 13th, 1999

In a two-hour, special Kentucky Life: On the Road , host Dave Shuffett treats viewers to the history, culture and homey conversation found along Highway 68, Saturday, March 4 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET and KET2. The route enters Kentucky at Maysville -- where the buffalo of yore found a shallow crossing of the Ohio River --w inds through the state and ends back at the river at Paducah.

In between, Shuffett stops in numerous small towns, country places and big cities to absorb the flavor and texture of the Commonwealth. Throughout the trip, ordinary folks make the journey worthwhile. In addition to chatting with young golf champ Whitney Wade, Shuffett meets amateur historians, front-porch philosophers, a couple who's been married three-quarters of a century and many other Kentuckians who pause to share their stories.

Along Highway 68, Shuffett finds significant moments in Kentucky's history, stopping at the Blue Licks Battlefield -- site of a late-Revolutionary War skirmish -- as well as the Perryville Battlefield, the largest Civil War engagement in Kentucky.

Kentucky Life looks at Kentucky's pioneer heritage at Harrodsburg, site of the first permanent settlement west of the Alleghenies. Shuffett explores the unique contributions of the Shakers in stops at Pleasant Hill and South Union while visits to Russellville and Bowling Green recall the Confederate sympathies of Western Kentucky.

Near Paris, Shuffett takes in a show at the Bourbon Drive-In, a blast from the past that's been in operation since the days of poodle skirts. In the heart of horse country, Kentucky Life spends time along Lexington's Main Street, where a longtime businessman remembers the heyday of downtown. Shuffett journeys into the era of big band and jazz in tours of the Buella Villa, a former Metcalfe County resort, and Lost River Cave, where patrons dined and danced in a subterranean atmosphere. And a visit to Grandma's Cupboard in Todd County gives viewers a taste of Kentucky Amish country.

One of the most recognizable names in America also has Highway 68 roots. In Bowling Green, Kentucky Life traces the origins of traveling salesman turned brand-name, Duncan Hines.

Throughout the trip, Kentucky's scenery dominates Kentucky Life's journey. From a scenic tour of the bluegrass region to sailing on Kentucky Lake, this nostalgic odyssey is a program no native Kentuckian -- or Kentuckian at heart -- will want to miss.

Kentucky Life is produced by Joy Flynn. Others instrumental in the series include Charlee Heaton, Marsha Hellard, Ernie Lee Martin, Janet Whitaker and Gale Worth. Ellen Ballard is series writer. The program is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET by visiting the KET Web site at http://www.ket.org , a Kentucky.com affiliate.
