The black hair and trademark sunglasses left an indelible image of Roy Orbison in the minds of many. But it was his voice that made him a legend. Although he passed away on December 6, 1988, Orbison remains one of rock's truly distinguished talents, whose influence still grows with each passing year.
Roy Orbison Anthology, a collection of classic Roy Orbison performances, airs on KET and KET2 Saturday, March 11 at 10/9 p.m. CT. The program includes comments of friends and colleagues who acknowledge how Orbison's genius and simple humanity have influenced their work and their lives. Among their number are Ringo Starr, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, Bono, k.d. lang, Jeff Lynne, Robert Plant, Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, Maurice Gibb, Bernie Taupin and Barbara Orbison.
The program features archival footage spanning three decades, including: "Only the Lonely," a 1960 performance from American Bandstand; "Crying," from a 1965 Amsterdam concert; "Oh, Pretty Woman," a rare 1964 music video of Orbison in London, England; and several other performances spanning his entire career.
Roy Orbison Anthology, produced by Hallway Entertainment, is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET by visiting the KET Web site at http://www.ket.org, a Kentucky.com affiliate.
