Richard Blenko in KET studio to sign glassware
During TeleFund 2000, KET celebrates America's rich crafts culture with two fascinating documentaries airing Saturday, March 18.
First, America Quilts, airing at 5:30/4:30 p.m. CT on KET and KET2, uncovers these humble bedspreads to find a revealing piece of American history, a therapeutic craft and a long-respected art form. The program examines quilts from three perspectives: as historical records, as symbols of family and community and as works of art.
The documentary features present-day quilts and quiltmakers from across the country, including works from major American quilt shows such as the annual show in Paducah. Quilters share the inspiration for their award-winning patterns and designs, their techniques and the stories told by their quilts.
Next, Hearts of Glass: The Story of Blenko Handcraft, airing at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET and KET2, is a detailed, affectionate look at an immigrant's dream that has become the last great America glass factory where all the work is done by hand. The program traces the West Virginia-based company's 100-year history through four generations of the Blenko family, beginning with founder William John Blenko. Blenko glass is found in collections from the White House to European cathedrals to the Museum of Modern Art.
As a special treat, Richard Blenko will be in KET's studios during the broadcast to sign the glassware offered as premiums for TeleFund 2000.
America Quilts, produced by Wisconsin Public Television, is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Hearts of Glass: The Story of Blenko Handcraft is produced Witek & Novak.
