The next episode of Kentucky Life, airing Saturday, March 24 at 8:30/7:30 p.m. CT on KET, explores aspects of unique Kentucky history, art and agriculture. Dave Shuffett hosts.
Though the American Revolution was fought mostly along the Atlantic coastline, Kentucky lands did play a part. Kentucky Life visits Blue Licks State Park, near Maysville, Ky., where the Battle of Blue Licks took place shortly after the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, but before word had reached the frontier. Pioneer Daniel Boone, his son Israel and approximately 200 Kentucky "rebels" confronted the Redcoats there in August 1782. Boone advised waiting for reinforcements from Simon Kenton, but an impatient major charged the river--and so the battle began. Today, visitors to the park can learn about Kentucky's part in the Revolution as well as the area's significance in prehistoric times. The Blue Licks salt springs were a favorite spot of mammoths and indigenous peoples.
Next, Kentucky Life profiles Louisville's Peter K. Eichhorn, who immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in the early 1960s, bringing with him the stained glass art he had been taught as a teen. This master craftsman excels in a craft that has not changed in more than a thousand years. In this segment, viewers see many of Eichhorn's colorful glass windows and watch as the people of Eichhorn Stained Glass create new works.
Finally, Kentucky Life visits an Edmonson County couple who have taken a new twist on the time-honored Kentucky tradition of strawberry growing. Adopting the science of hydroponics, Janet and David Dennison raise the luscious berries indoors, without using soil. The couple reveal some of the secrets for successful growing, including the use of predator bugs to control unwanted pests.
