Mixed Media, KET's weekly Kentucky arts showcase, this week dives into the varied world of sculpture--large and small, functional and playful, past and present. The program, hosted by Chip Polston, airs Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET1 and Saturday, Feb. 15 at 6/5 p.m. CT on KET2.First, Chip introduces Dan Torpey, a teacher from Louisville who makes wooden mechanical sculptures. Torpey's handmade automata, which generally consist of one or two small figurines that are put into motion with the turn of a crank, are quite whimsical in nature. "I love humor and have found that anyone who cranks one [of the automata] laughs or chuckles... then does it again," says Torpey.
Next, Chip continues an exploration of the concept of design that was begun the previous week. This time, viewers meet Louisville furniture designer Brent Camfferman, who uses old-fashioned pencil and paper to kick off the design process and then finishes with CAD (Computer Assisted Design) software.
Finally, Mixed Media viewers take a retrospective look at sculptor Barney Bright. This sneak peek from KET's upcoming Louisville Time Capsule was filmed in the mid-1970s while Bright was creating the "Derby Clock."
Throughout the program, viewers enjoy some live jazz when Michael Tracy, professor of music and jazz, and a few of his students from the University of Louisville stop by to promote Jazz Week (Feb. 23 - March 1) at the university.
Mixed Media is a KET production, produced by Gary Pahler. The program is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. Viewers can find out more about programming on KET's four digital channels by visiting the KET Web site at www.ket.org.
