Ben Miller stars as Dr. Edmund Bickleigh, a popular country doctor whose ill-conceived decision to murder his "difficult" wife sets his life spinning out of control. |
Bubbling under the respectable surface of picturesque Wyvern's Cross village, tensions are at a boiling point. When the charming Dr. Bickleigh invites his tongue-wagging neighbors to tea, taking the wrong--or indeed right--sandwich from the platter could literally be a matter of life or death.
Ben Miller ( Johnny English ), Barbara Flynn ("He Knew He Was Right") and Megan Dodds ( The Rat Pack ) lead an ensemble cast in "Malice Aforethought , " Francis Iles' classic tale of infatuation, revenge and the scandalous business of murder. Opening the 25th season of Mystery! the two-part "Malice Aforethought" airs Sundays, April 3 and 10 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET2 and Thursdays, April 7 and 14 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1.
Between an endless round of garden parties and village gossip, the only way long-suffering Dr. Edmund Bickleigh (Miller) can bear the torment of his formidable wife Julia's (Flynn) ferocious tongue is to find solace in the arms of sweet and besotted Ivy Ridgeway (Lucy Brown, The Cantebury Tales ).
Then Bickleigh falls in love with Madeleine Cranmere (Dodds), the exotic new resident at The Hall. He offers to marry her, but she won't have a divorced man. With no other recourse, Dr. Bickleigh prescribes the first of many doses of medicine to bring about his wife's demise.
Arrogant with the success of a seemingly undetectable murder, Dr. Bickleigh rushes to be united with Madeleine, only to find that a wealthier suitor has supplanted him. Gossip about his wife's death is rife, and it seems to Dr. Bickleigh that there is only one way to make the gossip stop--dispose of the gossipers.
Mystery! "Malice Afterthought" is produced by Granada and WGBH/Boston. The program is closed-captioned for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
