Author, former CBS newsman David Dick on One to One

For Release: Dec. 20, 2006

He covered the Jonestown massacre in Guyana, the invasion of the Falkland Islands, civil war in Nicaragua and El Salvador and, in 1972, won an Emmy for coverage of the shooting of Alabama governor and presidential candidate George Wallace. He chronicles one of his greatest challenges, a 13-year-battle with prostate cancer, in a forthcoming book. CBS newsman turned rural raconteur David Dick is Bill Goodman's guest on the next One to One, airing Friday, Dec. 22 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET2 and Sunday, Dec. 24 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1.

A Bourbon County native, Dick worked for WHAS-TV before joining the national network, where he worked with such broadcast legends as Walter Cronkite, Roger Mudd and Eric Severeid.

Dick, who has published 12 books through his Plum Creek Publishing company, left CBS News life in 1985 for the slower pace of rural Kentucky, becoming an associate professor at the University of Kentucky's School of Journalism in July of that year. He later became its director.

For the last 18 years has written a column, "The View from Plum Lick," for Kentucky Living magazine. His books have ranged in topic from his years in news, Follow the Storm: A Long Way Home , to a biography of Jesse Stuart, from whom he learned, "seek them out and listen," taking it as his personal directive to find ordinary people and tell their stories.

In this interview, Dick reminiscences about his years in news and the fulfillment a life as an author has brought him. He credits the late CBS cameraman Lawrence Pierce for his Emmy, saying it was he who kept the camera on Gov. Wallace rolling when others had packed up for the night. He also provides insight into the world of an international correspondent, and how he chose to cover his subjects.

One to One is a KET production, produced by Bill Goodman. Following the broadcast, One to One is available for on-demand videostream viewing at www.ket.org/publicaffairs/onetoone.htm and podcasting at www.ket.org/rss.
