His work includes tributes to the black soldiers and sailors of the Civil War as well as Urban League pioneer Whitney M. Young Jr. Sculptor Ed Hamilton is Renee's guest on the next edition of Connections with Renee Shaw, airing Saturday, Feb. 3 at 3/2 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11:30/10:30 a.m. CT on KET2.

Hamilton--who has been commissioned to create a sculpture of Abraham Lincoln in bronze for Waterfront Park in conjunction with the bicentennial of his birth in 1809--is also the artist behind the statue of York, the slave of William Clark who was a vital part Lewis & Clark's famed Voyage of Discovery of the Louisiana Purchase.

Active in his community, Hamilton teaches workshops as well as provides lectures for public schools, colleges and conferences, frequently opening his studio for tours. A protégée of the late sculptor Barney Bright of Louisville, much of Hamilton's public art focuses on the theme of African American achievement. His catalog of work includes the Spirit of Freedom, the African American Civil War Memorial in Washington D.C.; the Amistad Memorial in New Haven, Conn.; a statue of Booker T. Washington in the Memorial Garden in Hampton, Va.; the Joe Louis Memorial in Detroit; and a bust of slain civil rights organizer Medgar Evers in Baltimore.

Connections with Renee Shaw is a KET production, produced by Renee Shaw and Carolyn Gwinn.
