| KET celebrates Black History Month with Sisters of Selma, scientist Percy Julian, The Spirituals and more |

Throughout February, KET will broadcast special programming to celebrate Black History Month and the rich heritage and cultural contributions of African Americans. Programs range from profiles of historical figures and events to the history of the American spiritual and the story of Teenarama Dance Party . Kentucky Life gives viewers a glimpse of Kentucky's role in African American history when Dave hosts the program from the Underground Railroad Museum in Maysville Saturday, Feb. 3 at 8/7 p.m. CT and Sunday, Feb. 4 at 4:30/3:30 p.m. on KET1 and Sunday, Feb. 4 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET2. Louisville Life, airing Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT and Sunday, Feb. 4 at noon/11 a.m. CT on KET2, presents a feature on Farmington, a historic plantation that was home to enslaved African Americans. Sculptor Ed Hamilton, whose art focuses on theme of African American achievement, is the guest on Connections with Renee Shaw , airing Saturday, Feb. 3 at 3/2 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, Feb. 11 at 11:30/10:30 a.m. CT on KET2. Nova profiles Percy Julian, who overcame every obstacle to become a world-class scientist, a millionaire and a civil rights pioneer, on "Forgotten Genius , " airing Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET2 and Monday, Feb. 12 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1. Independent Lens examines the life of Billy Strayhorn Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET2. Strayhorn was Duke Ellington's co-composer and arranger, but as a gay man in the 1940s, he had to lead a discreet life. In 1965, Catholic nuns from around the country answered Dr. Martin Luther King's call to join the protests in Selma. The sisters tell their story in Sisters of Selma: Bearing Witness for Change , airing Friday, Feb. 9 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET1 and Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET2. Dance Party: The Teenarama Story , airing Sunday, Feb. 18 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET2, examines television's teen-dance phenomenon of the 1950s and '60s, focusing on Teenarama Dance Party , which was geared specifically to black teenagers. The program is narrated by Motown recording artist Martha Reeves and includes interviews with the late music legend James Brown. Finally, The Spirituals airs Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 10/9 p.m. CT and Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10:30/9:30 p.m. CT on KET2 and Saturday, Feb. 24 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET1. The program traces the history of the American art form of the spiritual with the American Spiritual Ensemble, a group led by Lexingtonian Everett McCorvey.
