Anne Sleet, who recently assumed office in the Boyle County city of Perryville, is Renee's guest on the next edition of Connections with Renee Shaw, airing Saturday, Feb. 10 at 3/2 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, Feb. 18 at 11:30/10:30 a.m. CT on KET2.
"When I look back over my life, I never thought about being a mayor or anything like that," Sleet told the Danville Advocate Messenger. "You never know what's in store for you, and that's a good thing. The opportunity just presented itself. The door opened and there it was. After some sincere praying, I just decided to take a chance on it."
That chance has put Sleet into the history books. She is the first African American to be elected mayor in Boyle County and one of just a very small number of black women to reach that office in Kentucky.
Though Sleet grew up in Lincoln County, she has spent all of her adult life in Perryville after marrying Raymond Sleet, whose local family roots can be traced to slavery days and the once thriving black community of Sleettown, near the Perryville Battlefield.
In this program, Renee asks Sleet about her life and plans for the future as chief executive in the town of 800 people.
