For Release: March 19, 2007

The sweet smell of success perfumes the air when Kentucky Life features a Bracken County farm specializing in lavender on the next program, airing Saturday, April 7 at 8/7 p.m. CT and Sunday, April 8 at 4:30/3:30 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, April 8 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET2. The program is hosted by Dave Shuffett and his canine pal Charlie.

Kentucky farmers who have traditionally grown tobacco are experimenting with other crops and "agritourism" in an effort to diversify. In Bracken County, the Scaringi family has set aside some acreage on their farm to grow a crop new to Kentucky: lavender. The entire family plants and tends to the crop, and after it is harvested everyone participates in making the crafts and products that are sold in the farm's gift shop.

Next, viewers will see that at Luther Luckett Correctional Complex in LaGrange, doing time isn't easy. However, s ince most of the prisoners in this medium - security prison will eventually get out, officials say rehabilitation is important . S o an art program was created, where prisoners create amazing pieces using only a few materials such as Popsicle sticks, nail clippers and colored pencils. The performing arts are also part of the program, including "Shakespeare Behind Bars," which has been featured on the BBC, by PBS and in a Sundance Award-winning documentary.

"A Romance with the Landscape" is the title of a recent exhibition at the University of Kentucky Art Museum. The popularity of this show is grounded in 19th - century French art, but viewers will learn in this segment that a close look at the similarities between the French and Kentucky landscapes might play a part as well.
