Kentucky's unique Appalachian college, Berea, as well as a different summer experience on the campus of a Bowling Green community college , are featured on the next edition of Kentucky Life . Hosted by Dave Shuffett and his canine pal Charlie, the program air s Saturday, June 30 at 8/7 p.m. CT and Sunday, July 1 at 4:30/3:30 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, July 1 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET2.Berea College was founded in 1855 as the first interracial and coeducational college in the South. Founded by ardent abolitionists and radical reformers, Berea continues today as an educational institution still firmly rooted in its historic purpose "to promote the cause of Christ." It provides educational opportunity primarily for students from Appalachia, both black and white. One of its perhaps best-known tenets is the labor program, designed to provide learning and serving in community, while demonstrating that labor, both mental and manual, has dignity as well as utility.
Next, summertime usually brings thoughts of warm weather, no school and vacations. But some kids are choosing to spend their summer a little differently -- by cooking, cleaning and learning about nutrition at Chef Camp. The two-week camp is held on the Bowling Green campus of Kentucky Community and Technical College and is run by executive chef Michael Riggs and associate professor Lisa Hunt.
