Former Sen. William Emerson Brock III discusses the future of education in America on next One to One

Host Bill Goodman spea ks with former Republican U.S. Sen. William Emerson " Bill " Brock III of Tennessee on the next edition of One to One , airing Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.

Brock, who is a member of T he N ew C ommission on the S kills of the American W orkforce, discusses the commission's report on education and the economy, titled "Tough Choices or Tou g h Times." The report proposes improvements in U.S. education that would allow American workers to compete more effectively internationally, including higher standards for both students and teachers and allowing schools to be run by educators as opposed to district school boards .

In "Tough Choices or Tough Times," Brock says, "Our nation's schools are failing to educate our children, and that has to stop -- else we condemn our own kids to ever lower incomes."

Brock also briefly discusses his own life in politics . He was e lected to Congress in 1963, and reelected to the three succeeding Congresses . From 1971 to 1977, he was a U.S. Senat or , and was later chairman of the Republican National Committee. Brock also served as secretary of labor for the Reagan administration .
