Kentuckians' overwhelming support for KET recognized with national awards

For Release: 2007-10-15 00:00:00

KET received three national PBS fund-raising awards including, for the fifth consecutive year, the recognition for Outstanding Overall Development Program, PBS' highest category of recognition. KET also won awards for On-air Achievement and Major Giving, including the industry's top honor, an Award of Excellence, for Major Giving.

These top national awards were announced in October at the 2007 PBS Development Conference in Palm Desert, Calif., before a crowd of public television industry professionals. The PBS development awards recognize excellence in all areas of fund-raising, including major giving, corporate and foundation support, membership, on-air pledge and special events.

Michele Ripley, president of the Commonwealth Fund for KET -- KET's fund-raising arm -- thanked donors for this record achievement. "This honor would not have been possible without the trust and loyal support of 32,000 Kentucky member families, corporations and foundations," Ripley said. "Their generosity assures KET can better serve all of Kentucky with the very best in public television and exceptional educational services."

Ripley has served the public broadcasting system this past year as national chair of the PBS Development Advisory Committee. At the conference, she was also named to the PBS Foundation's Station Advisory Council.

Also at the awards ceremony, the Friends of KET Board of Directors -- the body overseeing KET's statewide network of volunteers -- received the Community Development Award, given by the National Friends of Public Broadcasting (NFPB) to the volunteer board with an outstanding outreach project to raise community awareness and appreciation of local public television stations. The Friends of KET received the award for a series of events recognizing places around Kentucky designated by the late Dr. Thomas Clark as "Kentucky Treasures."

KET's volunteer services administrator, Tricia Dunn, who oversees the Friends of KET, was reappointed the NFPB board of trustees at the conference. This is the third year she has served on the board.

"These national industry awards are a remarkable tribute to KET staff and volunteers who work diligently every day to make KET an exemplary service that provides quality local programming for all of Kentucky, " KET Executive Director Malcolm Wall said.
