KET recently recognized the outstanding work of its volunteers with a reception and awards ceremony. The ceremony, attended by PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger, took place on October 18 at KET’s network center in Lexington. The Don Trivette Volunteer of the Year Award, named in honor of the late Fayette county teacher and KET volunteer, annually recognizes the volunteer who demonstrates unparalleled energy and dedication in the support of KET. This year, the award went to Martha Deener, a KET Network Center volunteer. Network Center Volunteers help with projects at KET’s Lexington headquarters by answering phones, processing mailings and participating in live-audience programs.
Deener, now retired, was an educator with the Fayette County school system for 23 years. She began volunteering at KET several years ago and has assisted staff during KET’s candidate forums and membership drives. She has also appeared with her husband, Larry, as a spokesperson for KET in on-air promotions and in Visions, the station’s monthly program guide.
The O. Leonard Press Friends Board Service Award, named for KET’s founder, went to the late Thom Yancy. This award identifies a member of the Friends of KET –– a statewide network of volunteers –– who works to advance KET’s mission in his or her community.
Yancy, a retired professor from Morehead State University, was originally a member of the Friends Board in the 1980s. He rejoined the Friends Board two years ago, representing Bath, Carter, Elliott and Rowan counties. Yancy participated in the organization of many KET events, most recently hosting a community event in Morehead to honor World War II veterans. His wife, Judy, accepted the award on his behalf.
“Volunteers are such an important part of KET,” said Malcolm Wall, KET executive director. “Through the good work of all of the volunteers across the Commonwealth, KET is able to achieve a more meaningful connection with the people of Kentucky.”
