Penny Serenade, Scrooge highlight December's classics

A woman on the verge of divorce recalls her heartbreaking attempts to adopt a child in Penny Serenade, which leads off this month’s movie classics on KET. Each classic film airs Saturday at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1 and encores the following Friday at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET2. Penny Serenade, starring Cary Grant and Irene Dunn airs Dec. 8 and 14.

1935’s Scrooge, starring Seymour Hicks, tells Dickens’ Christmas Carol story of the ultimate Victorian miser who hasn’t got a good word for Christmas — but revises his outlook after visits from the persuasive spirits. It airs Dec. 15 and 21.

A reporter’s fraudulent story turns a tramp into a national hero and makes him a pawn of big business in Meet John Doe. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing — Original Story, the film was directed by Frank Capra and stars Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. It airs Dec. 22 and 28.

And finally, Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce star in the Sherlock Holmes mystery Dressed to Kill, airing Dec. 29 and Jan. 4. A convicted thief in Dartmoor prison hides the location of the stolen Bank of England printing plates inside three music boxes, and when the innocent purchasers of the boxes start to be murdered, Holmes and Watson investigate.
