Higher education in Kentucky is theme for One to One and Connections with Renee Shaw

For Release: 2007-12-21 12:41:00

Bill Goodman talks with Council on Postsecondary Education Interim President Brad Cowgill about the agency’s ambitious “Double the Numbers” initiative on the next edition of One to One, and Renee Shaw speaks with two officials from the council about recent success and upcoming challenges for Kentucky’s public universities on the next Connections with Renee Shaw. One to One airs Sunday, Jan. 6 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2. Connections with Renee Shaw airs Saturday, Jan. 12 at 3/2 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, Jan. 20 at 11:30/10:30 a.m. CT on KET2.

Cowgill explains the council’s goal to increase the level of education in Kentucky to equal or exceed the national average by 2020. In order to achieve that, the number of Kentucky residents with college degrees would have to double. Cowgill stresses that this initiative would also improve economics in the state since there is a direct relationship between the percentage of people with college degrees living in an area and that area’s per-capita income.

Cowgill goes on to discuss the council’s recent successes, including uniting the community and technical colleges in the state to form the Kentucky Community and Technical College System.

On Connections, Renee looks at goals for the council, including the “Double the Numbers” campaign, while focusing on how these initiatives affect minority students in the Commonwealth. Her guests are Sherron Jackson, assistant vice president of finance and equal opportunity, and Rana Johnson, senior associate for equal education opportunities.

The guests also talk about efforts to improve retention rates of college students, entice citizens with some credits to return to universities to complete their degrees and increase minority enrollment and retention.
