For Release: 2008-01-07 11:01:00

KET celebrates the achievements and legacy of the slain civil rights leader with Martin Luther King State Celebration, airing Sunday, Jan. 20 at 10:30/9:30 p.m. CT on KET1.

Taped Jan. 15 at the Kentucky Historical Society, the program features a keynote address by Dr. William H. Turner, National Endowment for the Humanities Chair in Appalachian Studies at Berea College, and Gov. Steve Beshear presents welcoming remarks. The program also includes a performance by the University of Kentucky Black Voices.

The day’s events, sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State Commission, center around the theme “The Dream ... Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future.”

The program also features the seventh annual M. L. King, Jr. Citizenship Award, given to Rev. Walter L. Taylor Sr., retired pastor of Greater Liberty Baptist in Lexington. The award annually recognizes an individual who embodies the spirit and energy of the late Dr. King.

The program also features the 32 winning elementary, middle and high school students in the King Essay and Visual Art Contest. The awards are presented by first lady Jane Beshear.

Martin Luther King State Celebration is produced by the Kentucky Office of Creative Services. More information about KET programming and education services, as well as how to support KET, can be found at www.ket.org.
