Kentucky Life begins its 14th season by visiting a century-old family-run business, an eclectic zoo and an artist who creates unusual renderings of fish. The new season premieres Saturday, Feb. 2 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, Feb. 3 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET2.In the 1800s, William Henry Cox made his way from Pennsylvania to Rockcastle County where he began a blacksmith, wagon-building and hardware business. After more than a century, the business is still family-run, offering the personal service and eclectic selection of items that can’t be found in today’s superstores.
Next, Kentucky Life visits Henry’s Ark in Prospect, where exotic animals roam free and interact with visitors. The zoo is home to a diverse group of animals, including cows, goats, chickens, possum, llamas and Zeedonk, a zebra/donkey hybrid.
Then, the program profiles Ken Roberts, a former graphic artist with a successful career in California who retired to Western Kentucky several years ago. Now, Roberts uses material he finds near his home on Kentucky Lake to create unique and humorous models of fish.
Later this season, Kentucky Life profiles many interesting Kentuckians, including artist Virginia Petty, who makes her own paper out of various types of pulp; the late Skeeter Davis, a Northern Kentucky native and one of country music’s first crossover country pop stars; and multi-talented Angela Bartley, a bugler for the Kentucky Derby Museum, an aviation instructor, a dance instructor, and a Chautauqua performer who portrays Rosie the Riveter and Mary Todd Lincoln.
February’s programs also contain segments spotlighting the history of African Americans in the state, including some of the great basketball teams that played during the days of segregation.
Kentucky Life is a KET production, produced by Joy Flynn. Valerie Trimble is segment producer for this program. Some Kentucky Life programs are now available for on-demand videostream viewing at www.ket.org/kentuckylife.
