Newly elected Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo is Bill Goodman’s guest on the next edition of One to One, airing Sunday, Feb. 3 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.Before his career in politics, Mongiardo was a practicing physician and surgeon in Eastern Kentucky. On the program, he discusses his family history in Harlan County. Recruited by U.S. Steel to work in the coal mines, his grandfather emigrated from Italy to Benham, Ky. around 1910. The lieutenant governor goes on to retrace his own path from physician to politician, beginning with the tragic death of his brother due to poor access to health care in Eastern Kentucky.
Mongiardo goes on to talk about his political plans including his goals for health care, education and employment in the state. He stresses the importance of bipartisanship and expresses concern about the long-term damage that can be caused by negative campaigning during elections.
Mongiardo also makes his case for increasing adventure tourism in the state. Adventure tourism refers to ATV riding, horse riding, hunting, biking, hiking, fishing and all manner of outdoor activity. Mongiardo explains that adventure tourism, which would not cost much initially, has the potential to drastically improve the economy in Kentucky.
