Kentucky Muse visits three Kentucky authors whose diverse works have gained national attention in “A Novel Approach,” airing Sunday, Feb. 24 at 10:30/9:30 p.m. CT on KET2 and Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1.First, viewers meet Silas House, author of Clay’s Quilt, A Parchment of Leaves and The Coal Tattoo, at his home in Lily, Ky. He explains, “I just like the canvas of a novel. I like being able to just go anywhere that the character takes me. In a short story, you have to be so contained and rein things in. In a novel you can let the character completely take over.”
Next, Kentucky Muse travels to Newport, where Sheila Williams visits a local café and meets with fellow Northern Kentucky writers Jack Kerley and Ron Ellis. Williams is the author of Dancing on the Edge of the Roof, The Shade of My Own Tree, On the Right Side of a Dream and Girls Most Likely.
Finally, the program goes to Louisville, where Kirby Gann, author of The Barbarian Parade: Or, Pursuit of the Un-American Dream and Our Napoleon in Rags, visits Sarabande Books, the nonprofit literary press where he is managing editor, and a local restaurant where he once worked as a bartender.
All three authors discuss autobiographical and other influences on their work, explain how they approach the writing process and read selections from their novels. They also explain what appeals to them about the form of the novel.
