This month, Kentucky children have an opportunity to show off their creativity by entering the 14th Annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest for students in kindergarten through third grade.The Kentucky winner from each grade level will be entered into the national Reading Rainbow contest for a chance to win the grand prize, a laptop computer. The second-place winner will receive a flat-panel TV with a DVD player, and the third-place winner will receive an MP3 player.
To enter, kids must submit an original story with five original and colorful illustrations. Children who cannot write may dictate their story to a helpful grownup. The length of the stories varies by grade level. Complete rules and samples of winning stories from previous years are available at http://pbskids.org/readingrainbow.
The deadline for submissions is April 1 and Kentucky’s winners will be announced on May 10. Those interested in participating may contact Kathy Day at (859) 258-7451 or kday@ket.org for more information.
