Renee speaks with John J. Johnson, the new executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, on the next Connections with Renee Shaw, airing Saturday, March 22 at 3/2 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, March 30 at 11:30/10:30 a.m. CT on KET2.Johnson discusses his career of activism, which started at age 17 when he became the youngest president of any Kentucky chapter of the NAACP. He served as state president of the NAACP for 14 years, increasing Kentucky NAACP branches from four to 42. He also held positions as director of community services for the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, director of the Louisville and Jefferson County Community Action Agency, chair of the Kentucky Coalition of Conscience and as a member of the Urban League.
Johnson also discusses his goals for the commission, a state agency that enforces the state Civil Rights Act, banning discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations and financial transactions. Johnson describes the KCHR as the civil rights law-enforcement agency of the Commonwealth, and explains how he plans to lead the organization.
