Orson Welles stars in post-WWII film noir
Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton star in the suspensful tale about a man’s investigation of his friend’s mysterious death and the corruption he uncovers in post-World War II Vienna. Winner of the Grand Prize at the 1949 Cannes Film Festival, The Third Man airs on KET Movie Classics Saturday, March 22 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1 and Friday, March 28 at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET2.

The film tells the story of out-of-work pulp fiction novelist Holly Martins, who arrives in a postwar Vienna divided into sectors by the victorious allies. A shortage of supplies has led to a flourishing black market.

In town at the invitation of an ex-classmate, Harry Lime, who has offered him a job, Martins discovers that Lime has recently died in a peculiar traffic accident. From talking to Lime’s friends and associates, Martins soon notices that some of the stories are inconsistent, and determines to discover what really happened to his friend. The ensuing mystery entangles him in his friend’s involvement in the black market, with the multinational police and with his Czech girlfriend.
