Visit the Connections with Renee Shaw site: www.ket.org/connections/
KET focuses on health issues with a special edition of Connections with Renee Shaw and the premiere of Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick?, a four-part series that explores socio-economic and racial inequities in health and searches for their causes. The programs air Thursday, March 27, beginning at 9/8 p.m. CT on KET1.

First, host Renee Shaw explores how a growing group of people in Kentucky believe that the state’s health problems are based on social, economic and racial issues that are in need of pioneering and innovative public policy. Unnatural Causes: A Connections Special, welcomes Dr. Adewale Troutman, director of Louisville Metro Public Health and Wellness and a leading expert in health equity issues. Other researchers, policy makers, health providers, advocates and citizens from around the state also appear on the program, which features highlights from a special town hall forum held in Louisville.

Immediately following the Connections special, Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? debuts with “In Sickness and in Wealth, the first in a four-part series. The series crisscrosses the country investigating the findings that are shaking up conventional beliefs about what really makes Americans healthy — or sick. It turns out there’s much more to health than health care, bad habits or unlucky genes. The series probes why one’s economic status, race and zip code are even more powerful predictors of health and life expectancy than smoking.

“In Sickness and in Wealth” travels to Louisville to investigate the mystery of what’s stalking and killing so many Americans before their time. The program also explores the connections between healthy bodies and healthy bank accounts — and why residents of so many other nations, including many poorer countries, live longer and healthier lives.

Connections with Renee Shaw is a KET production, produced by Renee Shaw and Carolyn Gwinn. Unnatural Causes: A Connections Special is made possible in part by a grant from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. More information about Connections, including streaming video, is available at www.ket.org/connections. Unnatural Causes is produced by California Newsreel/San Francisco.
