Bill Goodman sits down with former Lexington Herald-Leader cultural-writer-turned-war-correspondent Jamie Gumbrecht on the next One to One, airing Sunday, April 6 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, April 8 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.Gumbrecht talks about her six-week assignment to the Baghdad bureau of The McClatchy Co., the company that owns the Herald-Leader. She describes her preparations for working in Iraq, including “hostile environment training” in Virginia, where she learned how to spot land mines and administer first aid. She also revisits her first day in Baghdad, from being whisked away from the airport in an armored car to settling in at the hotel that doubles an office building for McClatchy’s staff.
Gumbrecht discusses being embedded with the Kentucky National Guard, which transports all manner of supplies to military bases, and her impression of the unit’s experiences and morale. She also describes Christmas in Iraq, the National Museum, locals’ impressions of America and much more about her time there.
