Kentucky Life gets Antiques Roadshow appraisals

For Release: 2008-04-01 08:29:00

The next edition of Kentucky Life highlights the Three Ponds State Nature Preserve in Hickman County, Cub Run Cave in Hart County and Antiques Roadshow’s Louisville visit. The program, hosted by Dave Shuffett, airs Saturday, April 19 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET1; Sunday, April 20 at 4:30/3:30 p.m. CT on KET1; and Sunday, April 20 at 7/6 p.m. CT on KET2.

First, Lane Linnenkohl, western regional preserve manager, and Byron Brooks, Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission environmental technologist, take Dave out to explore Three Ponds State Nature Preserve –– the only Kentucky nature preserve to border the Mississippi River. Three Ponds also contains a cypress slough swamp and a bottomland hardwood forest, both rare features in Kentucky’s nature preserves.

Then, Kentucky Life visits Cub Run Cave. Discovered in 1950, the cave closed after only a year due to legal wrangling by landowners. The cave was reopened to the public in 2006 thanks to the efforts of Terry and Judy Schneble of Lebanon Junction. The Schnebles bought the 210-acre property at auction and employed local Amish carpenters to construct an elevated wooden walkway that traverses the half-mile length of the pristine cave. The many caverns and passageways of Cub Run Cave are still being explored and mapped.

Finally, Dave searches for hidden treasures around his house in preparation for Antiques Roadshow’s visit to the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville. He decides on a clock, a telephone and a group of artifacts he collected from plowed fields and stream banks. At the Convention Center, Dave waits in line with the thousands of other guests ready to get their treasures appraised. Finally, he learns what his antiques are worth, both in monetary and sentimental value.
