Author of How Starbucks Saved My Life on next One to One

For Release: 2008-04-01 08:21:00

On location at Starbucks in Lexington, Bill Goodman sits down for a cup with author Michael Gates Gill to discuss his book, How Starbucks Saved My Life: A Son of Privilege Learns to Live Like Everyone Else, on the next edition of One to One. The program airs Sunday, April 13 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, April 15 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.

Gill came from a wealthy family, graduated from Yale and had a successful career when he lost it all at the age of 60. He was downsized from his job as a top New York ad executive, saw his marriage disintegrate and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. At the age of 63, desperate for work and without health insurance, he found a renewed sense of purpose where he least expected it — at Starbucks.

Gill discusses his path to Starbucks and the life-lessons he learned there, including the value of respect for oneself and others, and living to fulfill his own happiness instead of others’ expectations. He talks about the upcoming movie based on How Starbucks Saved My Life, starring Tom Hanks. Gill also reveals his connection to Kentucky –– a memorable meeting with the Commonwealth’s hardest-hitting poet, Muhammad Ali.

One to One is a KET production, produced by Bill Goodman and Cindy Asher. Following the broadcast, One to One is available for on-demand videostream viewing at www.ket.org/publicaffairs/onetoone.htm and podcasting at www.ket.org/rss.
