Greg Mortenson, the author of Three Cups of Tea, a riveting adventure story as well as a testament to the power of one man’s mission to promote peace, is the next featured author on Kentucky Author Forum Presents, airing Wednesday, April 23 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET1 and Sunday, April 27 at 10/9 p.m. CT on KET2.

In 1993, Mortenson failed in his attempt to reach the summit of Pakistan’s K2, the world’s second highest mountain, in the Karakoram range. While recovering in a local village, he met a group of children sitting in the dirt writing with sticks, and made a promise to help them build a school. From that rash promise grew a remarkable humanitarian campaign, in which Mortenson has dedicated his life to promote education and literacy, especially for girls, in remote areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Currently, Mortenson has established more than 64 schools in rural and often volatile regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan, with another dozen expected to be completed this year. These schools serve more than 26,000 children, including 15,000 girls, who have had few education opportunities.

Three Cups of Tea has won numerous awards, including Time Magazine’s “Asia Book of the Year.” It continues to hold a place high on The New York Times bestseller list, where it has appeared for more than 60 weeks.

In this program, Mortenson is interviewed by Jacki Lyden of National Public Radio.

Kentucky Author Forum Presents “A Conversation with Greg Mortenson” is a KET production. The producer-director is Duncan Hart; Nancy Carpenter serves as executive producer. The author’s appearance in Louisville was produced by the Kentucky Author Forum (Mary Moss Greenebaum, producer) and sponsored by the University of Louisville, in partnership with Brown-Forman and The Humana Foundation.
