Bill Goodman speaks with author, editor and pastor Gerald Smith, associate professor of African-American history at the University of Kentucky, on the next edition of One to One. The program airs Sunday, April 27 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, April 29 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.
Smith discusses the classes he teaches at UK, including “Race and Sports in American Society” and “The African American Experience in Kentucky,” and the changes he has witnessed at the university since the 1970s, when he was a student. He explains the importance of taking his students on field trips to Camp Nelson, Berea, The National Underground Railroad Museum and Lexington cemeteries.
Smith goes on to talk about his work on the Martin Luther King Papers Project, a program designed to publish a definitive edition of King’s most significant correspondence, sermons, speeches, published writings and unpublished manuscripts. He is also co-editor of the first-ever Kentucky African American Encyclopedia, scheduled to be released in 2011.
