Jubilee’s 13th season kicks off with performances from some of the bluegrass scene’s most promising new acts. Taped at the River of Music Party in Owensboro last summer, the new season airs Wednesdays, beginning May 7 at 8/7 p.m. CT on KET1 and Saturdays, beginning May 10 at 11/10 p.m. CT on KET2.The season opener features The Grascals. The group, made up of bluegrass veterans, formed in 2004 and quickly gained notoriety, winning multiple music awards and nominations, including the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award in 2006 and 2007. The band, known for its innovative mingling of bluegrass and country music, performs a well-versed array of classic tunes and originals. Members of The Grascals are Leitchfield native Jimmy Mattingly on fiddle; Aaron McDaris, banjo; Jamie Johnson, vocals/guitar; Terry Smith, vocals/bass; Terry Eldredge vocals/guitar; and Danny Roberts, mandolin. Their newest CD is titled Long List of Heartaches.
The second program of the new Jubilee season, airing May 14 and 17, features more newcomers to the bluegrass scene: Adrienne Young & Little Sadie, followed by Cadillac Sky. Three critically acclaimed albums and exciting performances around the country have introduced audiences to the unique sound of Adrienne Young & Little Sadie. And Cadillac Sky’s brand of contemporary bluegrass blends tradition and innovation, combining classic bluegrass elements with contemporary styles and sounds.
Carrying on the family tradition of over 35 years playing bluegrass music, Dan Paisley, leader of The Southern Grass, says, “Our songs capture the spirit of traditional bluegrass. They represent the type of music that our fathers played, recorded and passed on to us.” Dan Paisley and The Southern Grass perform on Jubilee May 21 and 24.
The 13th season of Jubilee also features The Farewell Drifters, a group that brings elements of bluegrass, country, folk and even pop and rock into their unique sound; Blue Moon Rising, who perform original, classically crafted songs; Lonesome River Band, known for high-energy contemporary bluegrass; and many more outstanding bluegrass acts.
