Phyllis George discusses her past as Miss America 1971, becoming first lady of Kentucky and her current role as spokesperson for the National Alzheimer’s Association on the next edition of One to One. The program, hosted by Bill Goodman, airs Sunday, June 8 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, June 10 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.

George first talks about her childhood in Denton, Texas; her experiences as Miss America; and her job as co-host of The NFL Today on CBS, where she became one of the first women to have a nationally prominent role in television sports coverage. She also talks about her time as first lady of Kentucky, when she and former Kentucky Gov. John Y. Brown Jr. raised the money necessary to restore the condemned governor’s mansion.

Then, George recounts her mother’s heartbreaking bout with Alzheimer’s and her own difficulties as primary caregiver. George discusses the importance of public awareness of the disease and support for Alzheimer’s research. She says that there are about 80,000 Alzheimer’s patients in Kentucky alone, many of them living at home with family members –– not qualified professionals –– as caregivers. George details her plans to write a book, and the Alzheimer’s Association’s plans to produce a documentary, in which caregivers tell their own personal stories.

One to One is a KET production, produced by Bill Goodman and Cindy Asher. Following the broadcast, One to One is available for on-demand videostream viewing at www.ket.org/publicaffairs/onetoone.htm and podcasting at www.ket.org/rss.
