Consumer safety advocate on next One to One
Visit the One to One with Bill Goodman site: www.ket.org/onetoone/
David Byrne, former European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, is the next guest on One to One with Bill Goodman. The program airs Sunday, June 22 at 2/1 p.m. CT on KET1 and Tuesday, June 24 at 7:30/6:30 p.m. CT on KET2.

Byrne describes the process of “traceability,” which he helped establish in the European Union. This process ensures that food processors and manufactures know exactly where the ingredients they use come from and where their products end up. This way, when a food safety crisis arises, the source of the problem is easily found, and any defective foods can be completely removed from supermarkets in a matter of hours. Byrne says that traceability puts safety rules in place “from farm to fork.” He goes on to talk about food quality, the economic and political costs of sub-par regulations, and the differences between the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the corresponding European system.

Byrne also discusses his role at Alltech, a Kentucky-based animal nutrition company; his efforts to control tobacco usage in the EU, including a ban on advertising and sponsorship of tobacco products; and worldwide hunger and poverty.

One to One with Bill Goodman is a KET production, produced by Bill Goodman and Cindy Asher. Following the broadcast, One to One is available for on-demand videostream viewing at www.ket.org/onetoone and podcasting at www.ket.org/rss.
